This is a very common practice in the edu backlink building industry and we think you should know the truth. First, let us say that we will never build backlinks or copy on a student’s personal website for our clients. We know that doing so would present at least three problems for our clients. First, the “tilde” (aka, “~”). Not all the time, but USUALLY when you see the tilde in a web address, that is telling the search engines “hey, don’t index the pages behind the ~”. And if the pages with your links are not getting cached, they means they are not counting in your rankings. Exceptions to the “tilde rule” are student associations, clubs, teams or organizations which also may be located behind a tilde at times. Almost always sites for these student bodies ARE indexed.
Which leads us to the second potential problem: If a student’s personal site actually IS indexed by a search engine, there is very strong SEO evidence to believe that these pages are de-emphasized or devalued by the engine’s algorithm. The reason for this may be very plain, but we’ll spell it out here: these are college students and their websites can be similar to their MySpace page. It is the same reason you never see myspace results come up when you do a web search.
Lastly, the third problem is “student review” websites. Sometimes there are students that will provide a “review service”. This is usually where the student has an arrangement with the edu link builders whereby they will post the client’s (your) content and links on their page for a fee. But, the problem with this arrangement is the old familiar “SEO bad neighborhood”. That is, the students will write articles and link to sites that are less than desirable – sites that you do not want to be affiliated with.
Here is just one example (we won’t link to it, but you can copy and paste)…

Yes, this site is indexed by the search engines, but, as you can see, there are gambling sections to the site, as well as articles about and links to steroid sites. Such sites are the norm in student “review service” sites. There are obvious reasons that this site will be devalued by the search engines and there is potential that, given enough of these kinds of links, they could actually HURT your site instead of helping it
At eduLinksNow, we are aggressively focused at providing you the opportunity to buy backlink from the best edu pages out there. That means that if it is regarding in-context of SEO copy links, we’re talking about pages of copy on educational domains dedicated just to your client. If it is regarding PageRank edu links, we’re providing you with PR links on “almost-virgin” pages that have very, very few other outbound links.
